Rice is on the way to where it's needed most!

Over the past 2 weeks, 8,345 households in Tillabery have received a hundred kilos of rice each. As a result, around 59,000 people now have enough food to eat until the harvest.

Plan's goal is to reach nearly 165,000 people vulnerable to malnutrition so much more needs to be done.

Mrs Halimata, 75-years old, said of the distribution: "I came here hoping to get some rice, but was overwhelmed with joy when I got four sacks (100 kilograms)... It has been a very long time that we're only surviving from herbs. I've never in my life seen an allotment done so fairly."

Villages are grouped into centers and each household is carefully listed. This free distribution of rice is entrusted to the highly experienced organisation Caritas, supervised by Plan staff members.

Background on the Food Crisis

Since the start of the crisis, Plan has been supporting emergency activities in the Tillabery region targeted at children affected by lack of food and portable water.

All regions in Niger are reported to be affected by the current crisis; especially in the south and the east of the country. Plan's strategic choice to concentrate its efforts in the Tillabery region comes from the fact that different international and local agencies are carrying out emergency activities in other affected locations; mainly in Maradi and Tahoua.

One of the dramatic affects of the famine is that traditional migration has worsened as families have been forced to look for new places to go. Some children are already reported to have been sent to urban areas in Niger, or to neighbouring countries such as Ghana, Nigeria and Benin.
